New Jersey Working Families Hail Decision to Replace Sweeney on Legislative Apportionment Commission with Reliable Democratic Voice

New Jersey Working Families State Director Sue Altman released the following statement in support of state Democratic Party Chairman LeRoy Jones’ decision to replace Steve Sweeney on the New Jersey Legislative Apportionment Commission with Laura Matos:
We strongly support Chairman Jones’ decision to replace Steve Sweeney on the Legislative Apportionment Commission with Laura Matos. This decision brings desperately needed diversity to the Commission by ensuring that one of New Jersey’s fastest growing demographic groups is represented in a body that is responsible for ensuring our state’s legislative districts accurately reflect the most diverse state in the nation.
Just as important, this decision places the work of drawing new legislative maps in the hands of a reliable partner for Democrats at a critical time in our nation’s history. As we confront a Republican Party that is increasingly dominated by authoritarian Donald Trump acolytes, it is the height of irresponsibility that South Jersey appointees to the Congressional Redistricting Commission, including longtime Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey Nash and former Camden Mayor Dana Redd, were preparing to threaten Democrats’ chances of holding the U.S. House of Representatives in the upcoming midterms for selfish political motives.
This scheme, reported in numerous press accounts, demonstrates that Sweeney and his allies cannot be trusted to uphold their duties on the Apportionment Commission. We need an open and transparent process that puts the needs of residents above the craven interests of an outdated political machine.
It is past time that we move on from the broken politics of Steve Sweeney and embrace a vision of a Democratic Party that is open to our state’s diversity, inclusive of all voices and focused on carrying out the will of the voters. |
