Sierra Club NJ Endorses Melonie Marano for Somerset County Freeholder

Calls Marano “Committed to Environmental Issues” After The Somerset GOP Denies “Any Scientific Evidence” of Climate Change

Somerville, NJ  In recognition of the vital role every level of government plays in protecting the environment, Sierra Club NJ endorsed Democratic candidate Melonie Marano for Somerset County Freeholder.

“I am very honored to be endorsed for Somerset County Freeholder by the New Jersey Sierra Club, environmental leaders and protectors who work for everyone’s benefit,” said Marano. “At a time when our world is reaching a tipping point, and my opponent’s party denies climate change is real, we have to work fast to protect our families, our property and our communities.”

The Sierra Club endorsement says, “In Somerset County, our endorsed Freeholder candidate is Melonie Marano. She is committed to environmental issues and pledges to prevent pipelines in her county.

To highlight the importance of a Freeholder race on the environment, the Somerset County Republican Party’s official Facebook page stated just last week, “There’s absolutely no evidence” climate change is real, and then pointed to “robust parks” as “all evidence of the contrary.

“Pat Walsh and the Somerset County GOP have changed from the environmentalist party of Millicent Fenwick and Christie Todd Whitman to the party of Pat Walsh and climate change denial,” said Peg Schaffer, Somerset County Democratic Chair. “It’s so bad the GOP would rather mock Greta Thundberg, an autistic teenage girl so respected on climate change that the United Nations invited her to speak than admit climate change is real.”

Melonie Marano has a long history of fighting to protect the environment, and will work hard to change the way the Somerset County government’s buildings, vehicle fleet, energy acquisition, and park management – including golf courses – is managed to minimize its impact on the environment and promote good health for all residents.

“I will be a champion for renewable energy installation, water quality protection, responsible and poison free park management, and ensuring Somerset County does a better job protecting the future of our families and our economic base,” said Marano. “We’re one vote away from making a real difference in our world instead of just saying the right words but doing nothing.”
