President of NOW-NJ, JILL LAZARE, Questions Hamawy’s Integrity
A crucial question that arises in determining if a candidate deserves your vote is whether you can believe them? Do they have integrity?
Simply put - Does the candidate practice what he or she preaches? In Hamawy’s case, the answer is a resounding NO.
Hamawy professes to be against dark money in elections and expressly states that he wants to overturn the US Supreme Court case of Citizens United (the Case that allowed dark money contributions).
But while he emphatically states he is against dark money, look at what he does: he has approximately $2 million dollars in dark money from a SuperPAC promoting his candidacy, in this very election. His response when asked about his dark money support is less than satisfying: he stated that the system is broken and it needs to be fixed, but until that happens . . . well, he won’t call out the dark money helping him . . simple, period. So I cannot help but wonder what else he would be willing to compromise if it serves his needs?
The gulf between Hamawy’s professed viewpoints on dark money and his conduct is exactly the type of political doublespeak that is at the heart of Americans’ distrust of politicians. And this could potentially risk losing a safe Democratic seat. Indeed, this kind of doublespeak should cause any voter to question Hamawy’s integrity. And further, it causes one to wonder what else is he saying that he does not believe?
It is time for our politicians to put their money (and their dark money) and their conduct where their mouths are.
My message to the voters of the 12th congressional district as to Adam Hamawy is this:
Watch what he does, not what he says.
One of the two candidates NOW-NJ recommended for endorsement in the 12th congressional district, for example, Sue Altman, has done more that merely talk the talk, she walks the walk, and has done so for her entire career. With such truly progressive candidates, voters would do well to steer clear of candidates, like Hamawy, who say one thing and do another.
It is worth noting that last year, Tammy Murphy ran for US Senate against Andy Kim with a similar miscalculation: she refused to come out against the County Line because she stated that it was the way of NJ politics (and it was helping her). She ultimately had to leave the race because of that miscalculation. The voters were not fooled by Tammy Murphy and should not be fooled by Hamawy.
