AG’s Office Investigating Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Jersey City, N.J.
TRENTON — The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during the early morning on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, in Jersey City, New Jersey. One adult male civilian sustained fatal injuries. His identity and the identity of the involved officer are not being released at this time.
According to the preliminary investigation, officers assigned to the Jersey City Police Department's Street Crimes Unit encountered the decedent in the area of Bergen and Virginia avenues shortly after 1:00 a.m. on October 21, 2025. Gunfire was exchanged and the civilian was struck. A gun was recovered at the scene. Emergency medical aid was provided before the wounded civilian was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 1:44 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
