HUDSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE CRAIG GUY ISSUES STATEMENT

OPPOSINGTHE “TERMINATION” OF THE GATEWAY PROGRAM

AND THE HUDSON TUNNEL PROJECT

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Today, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy released the following statement opposing the “termination” of the Gateway Program and the Hudson Tunnel Project:

“I am deeply disappointed with the Trump Administration’s decision to ‘terminate’ federal support of the Gateway Program and the Hudson Tunnel Project. This move is short-sighted and jeopardizes a necessary and transformative infrastructure investment that our region cannot afford to lose.

“The Gateway/Hudson Tunnel Project is not just about rail lines under the river – it is an economic lifeline for families and small businesses throughout our region and the country. For working families, this project translates into shorter commutes, reduced travel costs, and more time at home rather than stuck in a daily gridlock of congested traffic. For small business owners, more reliable and efficient transit means employees arrive on time, customers can travel more easily, and delivery and supply-chain logistics operate more smoothly. Our community has long expected and demanded this vital infrastructure.

“Equally important is how this project creates jobs and leverages the strength of our labor unions that provide high-quality, good-paying jobs with safe working conditions and fair benefits. The Gateway Program is supporting tens of thousands of employment opportunities for engineers, skilled traders, construction workers, maintenance crews and supporting roles in supply chains.

“Safe streets and safe transit are core to this project’s premise. Upgrading our transit capacity helps remove pressure from our roads and enables safer walking, biking and transit access for our residents – our residents deserve no less. We cannot abandon this once-in-a-generation investment in our infrastructure, our economy, and our shared quality of life. I urge our congressional delegation, state leaders, and regional allies to fight back and demand reinstatement of funding to defend our region’s future and to ensure this project moves forward.”
