PATERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO TWO MAJOR OVERNIGHT INCIDENTS; MULTIPLE DISPLACED, FIREFIGHTER INJURED, SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

Paterson, NJ— On March 2, 2026, the Paterson Fire Department responded to two significant incidents overnight that required extensive resources, multi-agency coordination, and ongoing investigation.

303 Getty Avenue – 3rd Alarm Fire: At approximately 11:30 PM, Paterson firefighters were dispatched to 303 Getty Avenue for a reported structure fire in a three-story wood-frame apartment building. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions originating on the second floor. The fire rapidly escalated, ultimately requiring the declaration of a 3rd Alarm.

Despite aggressive suppression efforts, the building sustained catastrophic damage and has been deemed a total loss. An imminent hazard notice has been issued. The adjacent structure, 307 Getty Ave, suffered water and heat damage due to firefighting operations.

One Paterson firefighter was injured after being struck by falling debris while entering the building. He was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson and was subsequently released.

A total of 20 residents from the primary building and 4 residents from the neighboring exposure structure have been displaced. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

192 Berkshire Avenue, Fire and Criminal Incident: At approximately 12:01 AM, the Paterson Fire Department, along with mutual aid partners and Paterson EMS, responded to 192 Berkshire Avenue for a fire in a 1.5-story wood-frame home. The fire was located in the basement.

Preliminary information indicates the fire may have been intentionally set by an emotionally disturbed individual barricaded inside the residence. It is believed the suspect also stabbed two individuals prior to setting the fire. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is now in the custody of the Paterson Police Department. The cause and circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation. Mutual aid departments assisted in the suppression efforts.

Ongoing Investigations Both fire scenes remain active as investigators continue their work. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
