BREAKING: Vin Gopal Defeats Jen Beck for the 11th District Senate Seat in Upset of the Night

Gopal

Riding an anti-Republican wave that washed into Monmouth County, party organizer and relationship-builder Democrat Vin Gopal tonight beat incumbent Republican Senator Jen Beck in the battleground 11th District.

In the third most expensive legislative contest in the state, Gopal was up by 4,000 votes in his unofficial win over the sturdy Republican brand name.

Beck knocked off Senator Ellen Karcher in 2007 but lost her running mates in 2015 as Democrats began to play more heavily in the 11th with the piled-up collapses of Governor Chris Christie.

Gopal outspent Beck, but he also put in years of grassroots ground-gaming as a party leader.

If everything else holds, his victory creates a 25-15 Democratic majority in the state senate.

Gopal’s Democratic running mates, Assemblywoman Joann Downey and Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling, also won.
