Congressman Sires Endorses Mayor Diaz in Perth Amboy

U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D 8) today endorsed Mayor Wilda Diaz for re-election as Mayor of Perth Amboy.  Sires, New Jersey’s only Latino congressman cited several reasons for his support,.

“First, I have to commend Mayor Diaz for the strong and well-coordinated response the city has organized to the coronavirus pandemic. Perth Amboy has delivered over 250,000 nutritious meals and food supplies to Perth Amboy residents, to go with a strong communications campaign urging mask wearing and social distancing and a small business grants program to help the weather the slowdown of the economy. Protecting our people is the first duty of a mayor during this health crisis,” Sires stated.

“Between, the pandemic and Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Diaz has demonstrated time and again her ability to respond to a crisis and marshal the city’s resources to effectively meet the challenge. Wilda Diaz is the proven leader we need in this crisis,” Sires said.

“Further, since becoming mayor, Wilda Diaz has stabilized taxes and paid down $50 million in debt left by the previous administration, earning the city an A+ credit rating. This has saved the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt payments,” Sires continued.

“She also redeveloped the ASARCO site that people said could not be redeveloped. This area has been transformed into a job creating center with new warehouses providing hundreds of good paying jobs.

“Wilda has, also, been outspoken out on statewide and national issues of economic and racial justice, increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, immigrant worker-justice, and the creation of union jobs,” Sires added.

“When you add these achievements to a long list of others, the choice is this election is clear. The city would be well served by re-electing Wilda Diaz,” Sires concluded.

Wilda Diaz is running for Mayor of Perth Amboy along with two council candidates Pastor Bernadette Falcon Lopez and Board of Education member Junior Iglesia under the slogan Team Wilda Diaz 2020 – Stronger Together.
