Davenport 'Deeply Troubled' by the 'Treatment of Protesters,' Denial of Gov. Sherrill

NEWARK - Governor Mikie Sherrill in March signed three bills aimed at protecting the Constitutional rights of New Jerseyans and keeping communities safe, in the words of the Governor, among them the so-called masked bill aimed to curtail anonymous and deadly ICE overreach.
"We're not going to allow masked fed agents to terrorize our state," Sherrill said then. "We've all seen them in videos - unknown, unnamed, unaccountable, chasing after citizens. Again - not here in the United States of America. We're not going to tolerate masked roving militias pretending to be law enforcement agents.
“These bills underscore that here in New Jersey, we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law," she added. "My focus as governor remains on keeping the public safe. As we’ve seen across the country, Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger. That’s why in New Jersey, we are protecting our communities – strengthening our protections, banning ICE agents from wearing masks, and protecting residents’ privacy from federal overreach."
Today, armed ICE agents appeared outside the front gate of Delaney Hall, hiding their faces behind masks as they pepper sprayed and roughed up protesters.
InsiderNJ asked Attorney General Jennifer Davenport:
Will the AG prosecute the ICE agents wearing masks in the administration of their duties this evening outside Delaney Hall?
The Attorney General responded.
"I’m deeply troubled by reports of unsafe conditions at Delaney Hall and by the treatment of protesters and public officials gathered there this afternoon," she said. "This follows on the heels of the facility’s refusal to allow Governor Sherrill to access Delaney Hall this morning. We will continue to work alongside Governor Sherrill and her administration to protect the rights of New Jerseyans and ensure that everyone in our state is treated with the basic dignity the law requires.”
