Essex Bound to Draw the Eyeballs of Opportunity-Seeking Guv Candidates

McKeon

As the competitive primary for Governor in 2025 approaches, Assembly races are intensifying, particularly in Essex County. With several prominent gubernatorial candidates eyeing the region,  among them Bergen’s U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5), Assembly District 27 is becoming a focal point for political activity.

Incumbents Alixon Collazos-Gill and Rosy Bagolie, both completing their first terms, face a challenging landscape. Their fundraising numbers are notably low, with Gill reporting approximately $12,000 and Bagolie at $26,741. Of course, that is bound to change. But in stark contrast as of this moment in time, their district mate, Senator McKeon, boasts a hefty war chest of around $350,000.

The district encompasses Montclair, Roseland, West Orange, Livingston, Millburn, and Clifton, making it a critical battleground. The recent exit of Governor Richard J. Codey from the Senate race has created a vacuum that many are eager to fill, and several candidates are stepping up.

Among those rumored to be potential candidates are Mayor James Spango of Roseland, who has over $150,000 in cash on hand, and Livingston Mayor Al Anthony, with just over $50,000. Both figures significantly exceed those of the incumbents. Other potential contenders include Livingston Councilman Shawn Klein and West Orange Council candidate Jonathan Redwine, who has benefited from contributions linked to Steve Fulop’s PAC, Fund For Quality Leadership.
