A soured former aide to Newark At-Large Councilman Luis Quintana will challenge him in the May nonpartisan election.

Fired by Quintana, Nelson “Butchie” Nieves filed a federal lawsuit against the councilman, and now wants the job of the councilman (and former mayor).

Nieves began circulating in the streets late last year, as he gathered petitions toward a citywide run.

If he ends up following through and challenging for an at-large seat, he joins a ragtag opposition that includes former North Ward Councilman Hector Corchado and – probably – mayoral candidate Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins.
