Former Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi Jumps into CD2 Republican Primary

Former Cumberland County Freeholder and 1st District Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi of Vineland announced today he has entered the race to replace U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo. Last week Fiocchi sent letters of intent to run to all the county chairs in the district and he has started calling county committee members, today’s announcement makes his candidacy official

“I’ve been fielding calls from folks across the congressional district asking me to consider running for Congress since shortly after Senator Van Drew announced he was running back in November,” said Fiocchi, who served a single term in the legislature from 2011-2013. “Recently, as some Republicans have announced their intentions to run others have called. I’ve discussed the possibility with my family and friends, they are supportive and I’m running.

“I know our district because I’m from here,” he added. “I was born here, raised here, went to school here and learned my values right here in South Jersey. I learned these values from my parents, my church, my schools and the people of our congressional district. All values that will serve me well in Washington.”

The big CD2 GOP field now features the following candidates:

Brian Fitzherbert

Robert Turkavage

James Toto, Somers Point City Councilman

John Zarych, Esquire

Hirsh Singh

Seth Grossman, former Atlantic City Councilman and former Atlantic County Freeholder

And Fiocchi.

As a freeholder and as an assemblyman, I’ve fought for South Jersey and I will continue to standup for South Jersey in Congress,” said the former assemblyman, This district needs a Republican who is unafraid to stand with President Trump because, like it or not, the President’s policies are working. We can’t afford to send a Democrat to Washington who will simply stand with Nancy Pelosi and say no to everything.”

  1. Well, right away Fiocchi is off on the wrong foot by invoking Pelosi’s name. That’s good red meat for the die hard conservatives but it won’t resonate beyond that. Fiocchi needs to come out against corruption in South Jersey government, most notably the South Jersey Democratic machine run by GENIII. If he does that he might have a puncher’s chance — the only chance any R has this cycle in CD2’s open election — by holding the R constituency together and peeling off the large pool of disaffected Ds in CD2 who hate the South Jersey Democratic machine.

  2. He jumped in to late. 2 counties have already had their meetings and have endorsed Singh. It’s time for these other candidates to drop out.
