'God Never Promised us a Fair and Just World - but...'

NEWARK - Attorney and activist Chigozie Onyema, West Ward Democratic chairman and candidate for the Assembly on Tuesday's ballot in LD-28, went to the South Ward today in support of Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic nominee for Governor.

"There's an important election in a few days," he said, in reference to Tuesday, Nov. 4th. "You all heard it from our congresswoman. We're fighting against a lot of things in Washington. We've got a dangerous person in Trump. But the thing is that God never promised us a fair and just world. He gave us the gift of life and the ability to choose how we spend our life on this earth.

"So, when Trump says he's going to take away our SNAP benefits, we need to choose what we're going to do about it," Onyema added. "When Trump says he's going to take away from healthcare, we get to choose what we're going to do about it. And one of the best choices that we get to make is at the ballot box. Early voting is already started. We're ahead a little bit but we need to build a bigger cushion and that means every person here needs not just to vote but to get to the doors to make sure that everybody else votes.

"This is a critical election," he said. "You hear it every single cycle. This is the most important election. But the reason you hear it is because it becomes more and more true each time as our enemies get stronger and stronger. So, the democracy we fought for 50 and 60 years ago - we've got to protect it. We've got someone on the other side who wants to destroy the gains we've got

"When people start talking about the school funding formula, they're trying to fight back against civil rights cases we won. We've got to stand up at the polls," Onyema said. "When people talk about pushing back against affordable housing in our communities, they're trying to overturn civil rights cases we won. In the end this election is about more than one individual. It's about protecting the gains we won for the last 50 and 60 years. Trump is trying to reverse gains and we have a congresswoman and we have a candidate for governor who understands what it takes to hold the line."
