GOP Lieutenant Governor Candidate Contest: Carlos V. Carlos

Medina

The Republican contest for lieutenant governor has boiled down to businessman Carlos Medina versus Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo, according to a source close to the statewide campaign.

A Republican source emphasized what GOP allies of Republican gubernatorial candidate Kim Guadagno see as an opportunity given how Democrats have hobbled sitting Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32).

[With Democrats allied with South Jersey and Middlesex County] “pushing Prieto out of speakership and Hispanics basically voiceless in Democratic Party, it’s best that Guadagno can build a Latino Alliance because [Democrats] are taking Latinos for granted,” the source said.
Democratic sources, however, say there are voices in the party trying to point Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy in the direction of Assemblywoman Marlene Caride (D-36), in part to prevent a GOP gobble-up of the Hispanic narrative.
As for Rendo and Medina, both men have Cuban backgrounds and Hudson roots.
Medina is an independent and head of the New Jersey chapter of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Rendo last year led the New Jersey arm of Marco Rubio for President.
InsiderNJ first reported both names here and here.
As Medina’s name was in the mix earlier and Rendo surfaced just last month, the mayor may have the edge at the moment, but no source would say Guadagno has affirmed her final choice.
