In Asbury Park, Sherrill Rebukes Ciattarelli and Trump

ASBURY PARK - They say great things happen down here on the Jersey Shore, great music and great partnerships, often under turbulent circumstances, like when Bruce and Clarence met after a storm ripped the front door off the Student Prince Bar and the guitarist and saxophonist came face to face for the first time, to forge a lifelong legendary creative partnership.

Now Mikie Sherrill wants to connect with New Jersey like that, to make music that shuts up the infernally moronic Donald Trump and his cronies, a President whose history in the Garden State includes stiffing casino workers and evacuating to the comfort zone of his Central Jersey golf course.

That's the same golf course where Republican Jack Ciattarelli went to secure Trump's endorsement in the Republican Primary.

Sherrill said the cowardice of Republicans in Washington is insufferable enough. But she was even more distressed to see Ciattarelli - the likely GOP nominee for governor - run to Bedminster "to kiss Trump's ass" by securing the President's endorsement.

Sherrill works wonders with Democratic Party voters at The Wonder Bar.

"There are no children in the room," cracked Sherrill, explaining her choice of words on the last Saturday before Tuesday, June 10th, Election Day, when she hopes to secure the Democratic Party nomination, and a possible showdown with Ciattarelli.

The congresswoman went all over the state today, and plans to do the same tomorrow, in a last drive to connect with voters.

In the Wonder Bar this morning, the crux of local Bruce Springsteen legend, and the place where the late great Clarence Clemons played that night all those years ago when he went to meet the Boss, Sherrill jumped onstage in a majestic pink suit. The retired Navy helicopter pilot wowed the crowd of progressives (there was some Andy Kim love in the room), party diehards, assorted beach and boardwalk bums, and patriotic Americans looking to fight for the country in the face of MAGA hatred.

This was Sherrill's show, not Springsteen's, but there's unavoidable overlap there, especially when the supposed leader of the free world Tweets the following about Bruce: "He's not a talented guy, just a pushy, obnoxious JERK... and dried out prune of a rocker."

Sherrill took the fight back to Trump for New Jersey.

"I want to fight for all of you," she said. "I pledge to fight for the people of this state."

She's in a primary fight all right on Tuesday, but she kept her remarks pointed at Ciattarelli.

"Here is a guy that is going to take us down a bad road that we see coming from Washington," she said. "So that's why I'm tunning. I'm going to make sure your costs go down you have the opportunity and your kids can thrive. Let's everybody get out and vote.

"I first took an oath to the Constitution as a teenager," Sherrill added. "I am rooted in serving this country. I have four kids - four teenage kids. I care deeply about the future of this country. I simply refuse to leave the country to Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans and people like Ciattarelli, who we know will create a horrible future for them and we know we have some better ideas.

"In the Navy, we know, the worst thing you can do is to drive the ship aground."

But there's something else appalling, too.

"There are people on the bridge who know it's going to happen, and they don't say anything - because they're scared," Sherrill added. "I see those kinds of cowards again and again in Washington."

For example, rather than serve the Constitution, and the people, Republican congresspeople wouldn't budge from backing Trump's budget bill, which cuts $700 billion from Medicaid and $500 billion from Medicare over the next ten years, the congresswoman reminded the crowd.

Of course, the GOP doesn't want to run against Sherrill.

The stand-up congresswoman embodies too stark a contrast for a guy in the White House who wimped out of Vietnam and whines as his primary means of public communication, enabled by followers eager to occupy the lower depths of a primate cage sooner than accept not only the mantle of civilization, but of common decency, responsibility, and integrity.

No wonder Trump hates Springsteen.

And no wonder Mikie Sherrill found a crowd of impassioned supporters here this morning - the kind of scene that shows Sherrill's capacity to forge a lasting partnership with her home state, not unlike the Boss and Clarence, while Trump plunges into his Twitter-bonkers bunker, slapping away, and getting resoundingly slapped, by the likes of former ally Elon Musk.

Also in the room this morning backing Sherrill: U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Speaker Craig Coughlin, and state Senator Vin Gopal.
