Johnson Backs Away from Bid for Sheriff, Plays up Kugler and Madalone

The NJ Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee unanimously released a bill that extends application deadlines for two NJEDA tax incentive programs: Grow New Jersey Assistance and the State and local Economic Redevelopment and Growth Grant.

One of the names mentioned as a possible Bergen County Sheriff candidate has been Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, a Democrat from Englewood who represents the 37th District.

Johnson, appearing Tuesday at a Rep. Josh Gottheimer event in Teaneck, was asked who his pick for the now-vacant office of sheriff would be.

He mentioned not himself, but Robert Kugler, the police chief in Saddle Brook, and Cathy Madalone, the chief in Bergenfield.

Whoever runs for sheriff, Johnson said he wanted someone new.

“I don’t want to bring back any retreads,” he said.

Other county Democratic bigwigs on hand were county executive James Tedesco and state Sen. Loretta Weinberg, also from District 37. Both refrained from endorsing a candidate.
