Local Teachers’ Union Backs Republican Hahn for Edison Mayor

The Edison Township Education Association (ETEA) this week voted to endorse Republican Keith Hahn over incumbent Tom Lankey for Mayor of Edison Township.

“The Edison Township Education Association has voted to endorse Keith Hahn for Mayor of Edison Township,” said ETEA President Jeff Bowden. “Keith supports Edison’s Public Schools and has worked hand-in-hand with the ETEA to bring community events to the township’s children.  Over the last four years, the Lankey Administration has failed to communicate with the ETEA or the Edison Board of Education to address the overcrowding in our schools.  Edison’s Public Schools are now at crisis levels with no viable solution in sight.”

Hahn is the former chairman of the Edison Democratic Committee, who in June lost his reelection bid by one vote to Shariq Ahmad and subsequently changed parties to run for mayor as a Republican.

“The ETEA looks forward to working with the Hahn Administration to bring Edison Township’s Public Schools on par with other communities, such as Woodbridge Township,” said Bowden.

“There’s a crisis in Edison Township, with over 1,000 new students enrolling in our public schools over the past two years, bringing enrollment to more than 16,000 students,” said Hahn, an Edison police officer. “A comprehensive plan must be developed immediately between the Mayor’s office, the Board of Education, and community leaders to solve the overcrowding in our schools. The Lankey Administration has failed to work collectively with the Board of Education in the last four years, which has directly led to the overcrowding issue.  I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Edison Township Education Association and I’m committed to working closely with them and the Board of Education to resolve this crisis immediately.”
