Mejia Launches Bid for Congress in NJ-11 With Senator Bernie Sanders’ Day-One Endorsement

Analilia Mejia, political director for U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, defends Schools Development Authority (SDA) CEO Lizette Delgado-Polanco after Delgado-Polanco resigned her position under public allegations of nepotism in her hiring practices.

Analilia Mejia, a former labor organizer who led the successful campaigns for New Jersey’s $15 minimum wage and paid sick day laws, announced today that she is running for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.

Mejia, a lifelong New Jersey resident and daughter of immigrants, currently serves as Co-Director of Popular Democracy, a national network of grassroots organizations fighting for justice and democracy in communities across the country. She previously served as Political Director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign and as Deputy Director of the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor.

“Too many Democrats in Washington are selling us out and folding under pressure. Plain old blue just won’t cut it anymore,” said Analilia Mejia. “We need real fighters in Congress, and I’m running to be a brawler for working families. I won’t be afraid to stand up to Trump or his billionaire friends. I’m running to save our democracy and unrig our economy, so it actually works for working people. Billionaires and big corporations already have their representatives in Washington. I’m running because YOU need one, too.”

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed Mejia’s campaign on the day of her announcement, praising her record of delivering concrete wins for working families.

“I am proud to support Analilia for Congress. She has been a consistent fighter for the people of New Jersey and for this country,” said Senator Sanders. “Analilia led efforts to ensure families had access to earned sick days, healthcare, and fair wages, and she has proven herself a true movement leader. As someone who worked in a senior role in my campaign, I know she acts with integrity and is unwavering in her commitment to our shared values. At a moment when oligarchs and corporate interests continue to capture our government, we need true progressives to take our country back for working Americans. Analilia's experience shaping policy, her relentless advocacy, and her deep dedication to working families make her the best choice.”

Analilia Mejia’s platform

  • Hold Trump and his allies accountable for their corruption
  • Taxing billionaires and big corporations to unrig the economy
  • Guaranteeing universal healthcare and childcare for every American
  • Fixing and funding our crumbling infrastructure.

Mejia was a leader of the grassroots resistance against Donald Trump during his first term in office, training over a thousand community leaders across New Jersey and helping flip the House of Representatives in 2018, including in NJ-11. She spent a decade as a union organizer with 32BJ SEIU, UFCW, and UNITE HERE, and she was honored as a "Champion for Change" by President Obama for her work advancing paid sick days.
