New Jersey Election Day 2017 Nuggets from the Road

Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) looked strong on Election Day amid popping and emerging storylines with nothing yet solid. “Yes,” groaned a North Jersey source, when informed of the senate president’s muscular morning field operation. “That’s going to be a major headache for the NJEA.”

In Westfield, a GOP stronghold, home to the barricaded Chris Christie brain trust, the morning Democratic turnout looked higher than usual, triggering a wave of mild Republican Party panic.

“It’s the anti-Trump effect,” said a source, juggling away the possibility that Christie fatigue was at work.

In heavily Republican Hunterdon, Clerk Mary Melfi told InsiderNJ that turnout was likewise “strong.”

In heavily Democratic Essex County, Clerk Chris Durkin described turnout as “very good,” with nothing yet to report in the way of hard numbers.

In Newark, Mayor Ras Baraka and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy were scheduled to campaign together this afternoon.

“I have no particular insight into this race but why do I get the feeling that Parker Space will get his highest vote total ever,” one source deadpanned. Mountain man Assemblyman Space (R-24) made headlines earlier this season when he posed with a Confederate Flag at a Hank Williams, Jr. concert and scandalized out-of-district Democrats.
