No Christmas Cheer for Dover Dems

DOVER - When you pick a candidate who loses, there are consequences.

James Dodd, the Democratic mayor of this Morris County town, nonetheless, backed Jack Ciattarelli for governor. Dodd talked about it on Fox News and Ciattarelli often mentioned Dodd - and other Dems who endorsed him - on the campaign trail.

Now we know the results.

Mikie Sherrill won easily statewide and in Dover, she beat Ciattarelli by more than 2-1. So much for the mayor's endorsement.

The election is over, but the story continues.

The Morris County Democratic Committee is "requesting" that the entire Democratic committee in Dover resign "immediately."

Dodd is a committee member himself.

Neither Dodd, nor Maria Solines, the municipal Democratic chair, have responded yet to messages.

A statement from the county Dems' executive board said the party's Dover committee violated county bylaws and its anti-harassment policy.

More specifically, it charged the local Dems with supporting candidates not endorsed and backed by Morris County Democrats.

Besides local support for Ciattarelli, the county party says that local Dems also backed Republican Assemblyman Christian Barranco (who wound up losing) and three council candidates not endorsed by the Morris Dems. Those three candidates lost too.

Moreover, the local party targeted one of the county-endorsed council candidates with "offensive, intimidating and demeaning language."  Imagine that.

More to the point, the statement says that if the 24-member Dover committee does not resign by Dec.22, the Executive Board will seek to remove them through a countywide vote at a convention in January.
