“A Death Sentence:” Make the Road New Jersey Condemns Racist Supreme Court Decisions that Decimate Critical and Well-Established Protections for Immigrants Seeking Safety in the U.S.

The 6-3 decisions would force hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian refugees to face death and displacement in their home countries and would permit the U.S. government to prevent asylum seekers from arriving in the U.S. to seek refuge.

ELIZABETH, NJ — Earlier today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two decisions with devastating consequences for immigrants.  First the Court ruled that the Trump administration can end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Haiti and Syria, even though Haiti has been under a state of emergency since March 2024 and the State Department warns against travel to Syria because of violence. The Court also decided that Customs and Border Protection can deny people seeking safety at the border the opportunity to seek asylum, a right that is long enshrined in both U.S. and international law.

In response, Nedia Morsy, State Director of Make the Road New Jersey — representing more than 6,500 immigrant and working class members across the state — released the following statement:

“Today’s rulings should be understood as part of the administration’s broader de-documentation campaign, not as an isolated attack on lawful and successful programs. The Supreme Court should be an independent check on Trump’s cruelty, but they’ve shown once again that they will sign off on the worst of Trump’s violent impulses.

“It’s time to pass all TPS legislation immediately and move to create a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants. Everyone deserves stability and safety. No one should be subject to the whims of court decisions.”
