ABC-NJ President Says Task Force Recommendations Need to Consider the Majority of NJ’s Workforce:  Non-Union Workers

Samantha DeAlmeida, President of the Associated Builders and Contractors of New Jersey, released the following statement regarding the release of Governor Murphy’s State Future of Work Task Force’s Roadmap and Recommendations:

“While the Associated Builders and Contractors of New Jersey agree with some of Governor Murphy’s recommendations, including expanding worker training and modernizing the state’s antiquated NJDOL Unemployment Insurance website, many of today’s recommendations are geared towards a union workforce, when the majority of New Jersey’s workers are not unionized.

“In our industry, seventy-eight (78%) of New Jersey’s construction workforce is non-union labor, and ninety-eight percent (98%) of Black and Hispanic construction companies are non-union shops. Moreover, it’s concerning that several of the Governor’s recommendations focus on increasing enforcement actions toward employers, rather than working cooperatively with business owners to ensure compliance.

“If the Governor wants focus on the most comprehensive workforce improvements for New Jersey’s future, we urge him to include non-union workers — the majority of New Jersey’s workforce — in the conversation.”
