AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter:

“For a few hours before and then during the morning rush hour, AccuWeather meteorologists are expecting the snow to fall at an extremely heavy rate of 1-2 inches per hour and we are very concerned about how this will impact commuters. As we saw recently with the I-95 highway in VA, when it is snowing that fast, despite the best efforts of experienced road crews in this part of the country, it is hard to keep up with the accumulation and keep roads clear of snow. This will be particularly a concern from Eastern New York including the Albany area through Connecticut, Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts including the Boston area. The combination of reduced visibility from the snow and slippery road conditions will make for a dangerous Friday morning commute and people in these areas are advised to consider altering their plans to work remotely, if at all possible or delay travel until the snow has ended and travel conditions have improved.

“In parts of Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the evening commute will also be impacted by lingering snow and across the region colder temperatures will cause snow and slush to refreeze into Friday night resulting in further travel challenges.”

AccuWeather Global Weather Center – February 24, 2022 –  The second storm of the week that brought snow and ice from the Southwest to the southern Plains will move into the Northeast by Thursday night and Friday and produce a combination of heavy snow, wintry mix and rain.

In anticipation of this storm, winter weather advisories and winter storm watches and warnings were in effect for much of the Northeast as of Thursday morning. AccuWeather meteorologists are calling for snow totals as high as 12-18 inches in parts of New England, along with a mix of snow, ice and rain for points to the south along the I-95 corridor.

Earlier this week, rain combined with record warmth in some locations and caused much of the snowpack in the entire region outside of upstate New York and northern New England to melt away. This incoming storm will reestablish snow cover in some locations, but the forecast still has some question marks, AccuWeather forecasters say.

“The exact track of this system will be pivotal in determining where the heaviest snow ends up and what spots could face icing issues,” explained AccuWeather Meteorologist Adam Sadvary.

One of the largest metropolitan areas with a close call between all snow and a mix of snow and sleet is Boston. Relatively warmer air will be surging in from the south, but it is likely to advance only as far north as the Boston vicinity. In addition, the preceding conditions may be a factor in snowfall totals as well.
