ACECNJ Applauds Award of State’s First Design-Build Project

Upper Township, NJ — The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACECNJ) today applauded the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on the award of the design-build team for the Route 50 Bridge over Cedar Swamp Creek project in Upper Township, Cape May County, New Jersey, marking the State’s first design-build highway project since enabling legislation was signed into law in 2021.

ACECNJ commends Commissioner Priya Jain for her leadership in advancing innovative infrastructure delivery methods, as well as the professional staff of NJDOT whose dedication and technical expertise have brought this milestone project to fruition.

“ACECNJ is proud to support NJDOT’s advancement of design-build and applauds the Department for reaching this important milestone,” said Joseph A. Fiordaliso, President of ACECNJ. “This achievement reflects a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and the continuous improvement of how critical infrastructure is delivered in New Jersey.”

ACECNJ also commends Governor Mikie Sherrill for her focus on cutting through red tape and making government more efficient, effective, and accountable - an approach that aligns directly with the disciplined and streamlined delivery inherent in a successful design-build program.

As NJDOT continues to build a pipeline of future design-build projects, ACECNJ looks forward to working collaboratively with the Department to ensure these opportunities are structured to maximize industry participation and competition. In that context, ACECNJ encourages continued attention to procurement timelines to support robust
engagement from the engineering community.

“Establishing a forward-looking program of design-build projects presents a meaningful opportunity to align delivery strategy with project goals,” Fiordaliso added. “A clear and efficient procurement process will be critical to attracting strong teams and delivering the best outcomes for the State.”

ACECNJ also recognizes our partnership with the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association, whose collaboration with the engineering community has helped provide constructive, industry informed thought leadership to NJDOT in advancing a strong and effective design-build program.
