AG’s Office Identifies the Driver and Members of the New Jersey State Police Involved in Pursuit and Shooting in Orange, N.J., on November 9, 2025

TRENTON — The Attorney General’s Office today released the identity of the driver involved in a shooting with New Jersey State Police (NJSP) troopers on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at approximately 2:10 p.m., following a vehicular pursuit that ended in the City of Orange Township in Essex County, New Jersey. The driver has been identified as Mark Boyd, 45, of East Orange, New Jersey.

According to the preliminary investigation, NJSP troopers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of a stolen 2024 Acura TLX near the Meadowlands Sports Complex and American Dream Mall. The Acura fled, getting onto the New Jersey Turnpike southbound and then Interstate 280 westbound, where it exited onto Freeway Drive in Orange, New Jersey.

On Freeway Drive, the Acura struck a civilian vehicle, a black Mercedes Benz. After troopers positioned their police vehicles around the Acura, body-worn camera footage revealed an apparent gunshot was heard coming from the area of the Acura. One trooper then advised others to “take cover.” The vehicle backed into a marked and occupied NJSP vehicle and then accelerated forward. Several NJSP troopers fired their service weapons, striking the Acura multiple times. Mr. Boyd exited the vehicle and ran, pursued on foot by NJSP Detectives Andre Almeida and Robert Keller. During the foot pursuit, Mr. Boyd and troopers exchanged gunfire and Mr. Boyd was struck. Troopers immediately secured Mr. Boyd, requested medical personnel, and began rendering aid.

Mr. Boyd, who was later found to have active arrest warrants in an unrelated matter, was transported to University Hospital in Newark where he remains for treatment. A firearm was recovered near Mr. Boyd. One trooper who was in the marked police vehicle struck by the Acura sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The following members of the NJSP were identified as discharging their firearms during the incident: NJSP Detectives Almeida and Keller, and NJSP Troopers Jose Bonilla, Giovine Domenico, Marques Lucas, and Josue Argueta.

Under Attorney General Directive 2019-4, known as the Independent Prosecutor Directive, the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) determines which agency will conduct the independent investigation of an officer-involved shooting. OPIA serves as the default independent investigator in instances involving the New Jersey State Police.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
