AG’s Office Investigating Death Of Driver In Multi-Vehicle Crash In Winslow Township
That Occurred Shortly After Police Attempted To Stop His Vehicle
WINSLOW TOWNSHIP – The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a driver who was involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Winslow Township late last night after police attempted to stop him for a reported hit-and-run accident in Gloucester Township. The identity of the decedent is not being released at this time.
According to the preliminary investigation, a hit-and-run accident was reported shortly after 10 p.m. in Gloucester Township. Two members of the Gloucester Township Police Department subsequently located the vehicle driven by the decedent. The officers began to pursue the vehicle, but called off the pursuit. Soon afterward, at approximately 10:15 p.m., the decedent, who was traveling southeast on Sicklerville Road in Winslow Township was involved in an accident with three vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. Members of the Winslow Township Police Department who responded to the scene provided first aid to several injured persons until emergency medical personnel arrived.
The decedent was transported to Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:57 p.m. The driver of one of the other vehicles was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was reported in critical but stable condition. The two other male drivers were taken to Jefferson Washington Township Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
This investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
