Almeida and Lazarow Call on Republican Opponents to Condemn Trump’s Continued Mishandling of COVID-19 Crisis

Candidates Say Pandemic Goes Beyond Partisanship, Residents Deserve to Know Where Canale and Docteroff Stand

WEST CALDWELL, NJ — Democratic candidates for Township Council, Jessica Almeida and Christy Lazarow, are calling on their Republican opponents Council members, Kathy Canale and Michael Docteroff, to publicly condemn President Donald Trump’s continued mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has contributed to the deaths of over 200,000 Americans and over 16,000 New Jerseyans including members of our own community. Despite the pleas of medical experts, President Trump has downplayed the virus since the beginning of the crisis and his callous indifference has now led to the White House being declared a hot zone for new infections, multiple members of the President’s inner circle being infected, including former Governor Chris Christie, and the second presidential debate now reportedly being scrapped.

“We all lived through the Spring when COVID-19 ravaged our state and we know that President Trump has utterly failed in his responsibility to keep us safe, but Kathy Canale and Michael Docteroff have been completely silent on this vitally important issue,” said Jessica Almeida. “This goes beyond partisan politics — President Trump clearly does not care about putting other people at risk, and West Caldwell residents deserve to know where their representatives stand.”

Almeida and Lazarow are Democrats running to bring a different voice to the West Caldwell Township Council. They are both longtime residents, working mothers and active community members who care deeply about West Caldwell’s future.

“We are living through unprecedented times, and that means that our leaders need to tell us where they stand on the most pressing issues that affect all of our families,” said Christy Lazarow. “President Trump has recklessly put people at risk, even choosing to travel here to New Jersey after he knew he was exposed to the virus. We believe that this conduct is absolutely unacceptable, and we hope that Kathy Canale and Michael Docteroff will join us in condemning it.”
