AMY KENNEDY RESPONDS TO TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION SUSPENSION

Kennedy: “We will, instead, remember that he chose to forgo our values and further divide us in a time of crisis.”

“Van Drew must disavow Trump’s immigration order and his cruelty.”

Brigantine, NJ — Last night, President Trump signed an executive order to suspend legal immigration into the U.S. In response, Amy Kennedy, congressional candidate for New Jersey’s second district, released the following statement:

I’m saddened and outraged that President Trump would use the pandemic as an excuse to rally his political base by turning to racism and xenophobia and suspending legal immigration into the U.S. Congressman Jeff Van Drew is following Trump blindly at the expense of South Jersey communities. Van Drew should disavow Trump’s immigration order and make it clear that we are not in support of his cruelty.

Many immigrants are frontline workers, and have helped carry us through this crisis. They are our neighbors, farmers, grocery store and health care workers. But, it’s clear that the Trump administration will stop at nothing to carry out their anti-immigrant agenda, except for when it benefits them. Trump’s order is not about protecting the nation’s health as he has made exceptions to allow temporary workers into the country whose labor he can exploit.

This executive order is nothing more than an attempt to demonize immigrants and distract from his failed leadership. President Trump should know we will not be distracted, we will, instead, remember that he chose to forgo our values and further divide us in a time of crisis.
