Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker Condemns Georgia Governor and Republicans for their Subversion of Voting Rights

Kingston, NJ — Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker condemns Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and GOP members of the Georgia state legislature for passing anti-democratic legislation that disenfranchises voters, most often Black and brown voters. The legislation was signed into law yesterday evening in a partisan vote.

Andrew Zwicker Quote: “I stand with the people of Georgia,”  said Asm. Andrew Zwicker (D – South Brunswick). “Yesterday, NJ passed legislation to increase access to voting and allow more New Jerseyans the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. Simultaneously Georgia signed into law a 95-page voter suppression bill that made it a crime to give voters food and water while standing in line, restricted ballot drop boxes, and allowed unlimited challenges to a voter’s eligibility. The ongoing fallacy of voter fraud is hiding the true motivation of this bill and similar ones around the country – to disenfranchise voters, most often Black and brown voters, because Republicans are more concerned about who votes for them rather than who votes. Georgia voters made their desire for change known in the January election.  Every vote matters, every voice matters, and we must combat any and all efforts to suppress anyone’s right to vote.  That’s what we did yesterday in NJ and it is now up to the United States Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to put an end to voter suppression in every state.”

This week S3203/A4830, sponsored by Senator Nia Gill (D-Montclair) and Asm. Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick), was passed by the New Jersey Senate and now heads to New Jersey Governor Murphy’s desk for his signature. The bill provides voters the opportunity to vote early in primaries and general elections.
