Assemblyman Joe Danielsen Introduces Legislation to Establish Ranked-Choice Voting For Primary & General Elections In New Jersey

Governor Phil Murphy formally entered the Legislative District 17 race in support of Assemblymen Joe Egan and Joe Danielsen, a pair of incumbent Democrats.

Somerset - Assemblyman Joe Danielsen (D-17) released the following statement: "This morning, I was proud to partner with Senator Andrew Zwicker in introducing legislation to establish ranked-choice voting in the State of New Jersey for Primary and General Elections. We are in a unique moment in New Jersey, where elections are becoming increasingly competitive, with more candidates entering the race and offering their visions for their communities. And while this is good for our State and our democracy, our “winner-take-all” electoral system is not built for this. And it is highly likely without reform, candidates in both primaries and general elections may regularly win with less than 50% of the vote."

"As we saw across the river in New York City, ranked-choice voting solves this issue by allowing voters more choice when voting without the fear of a “wasted vote.” It allows voters the chance to vote for their preferred candidate first, while giving them the security of being able to rank other candidates in order of preference so that if their first choice candidate is eliminated early, they will still have a say in the outcome."

"As New Jersey moves into a new, more competitive era in its politics, we must reform our electoral system to fit these new times and ensure that voters can truly make their voice heard, and that candidates to public office need more than just a bare plurality to represent their communities. I intend to advocate strongly on this issue because New Jersey needs this reform, and our residents deserve systems that will allow them to make their voices heard."
