Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla Celebrates Hoboken’s Nine Years With Zero Traffic Deaths
Assemblyman Bhalla’s infrastructure redesigns as Mayor eliminated traffic deaths in one of nation's most densely populated cities
Hoboken, NJ — This month marks nine years without a single traffic fatality in Hoboken. The milestone was celebrated by Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla (D-Hoboken), who spearheaded Vision Zero policies as mayor of the mile square city.
"Going this many years without a traffic fatality is all the proof you need that Vision Zero works," said Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla, who implemented Vision Zero policies during his two terms as Mayor of Hoboken. "We fully committed to updating our infrastructure, and it not only saved lives but made our streets much easier to navigate, whether you're walking your kids to school or biking to work. Hoboken should be seen as a model to replicate, because every community has the power to make these same changes. I'm going to keep pushing at the state level so other towns have the tools and funding they need to keep their residents safe."
Assemblyman Bhalla served two terms as Hoboken’s mayor, from 2018 to 2026, where he oversaw the systematic redesign of the city’s streets through traffic-calming measures, including: daylighting intersections, curb bump-outs, reducing speed limits to 20 mph citywide, and installing an expansive network of bike lanes.
Hoboken is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States with approximately 60,000 residents in just over one square mile.
Now a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, Bhalla will continue to advocate for Vision Zero policies statewide.
