Assemblyman Reginald Atkins Announces a free 2-Part Series Showcasing Exciting Career Opportunities in the Maritime Industry

Roselle, NJ – July 14, 2023

Assemblyman Reginald Atkins is proud to announce an upcoming 2-part series that aims to provide valuable insights and guidance to families and youth who do not see college as their next step after high school. The event will shed light on the numerous exciting career opportunities available in the maritime industry, aiming to empower individuals with alternative pathways to success.

Part 1 of the series, titled “Maritime Discussion,” will take place on July 27th at 5:30 PM. This free virtual event will bring together distinguished guests, including Executive Director Andre Stuckey, the first and only Black Executive Director in Maritime history. Joining him will be Captain Ferrie, President of the NJ Sandy Hook Pilots Association; Captain Pinto, President of the Harbor Pilots Association; Captain Miller, President of the Metro Pilots Association, and Captain Richardson, President of the Interpret Pilots Association. Their combined expertise and experience will provide attendees with unique insights into the maritime industry, including sail handling and theory, sailmaking, rigging, ship and boat handling, team building, character development, cultural history, and related subjects.

The event aims to dispel the notion that college is the only path to success and highlight the lucrative career opportunities available in the maritime field. Ashley Huckabee, a recent graduate of a local high school, explained that this information about alternative pathways is not spoken about in public schools. “Opportunities for high school graduates to make $84k right out of high school shouldn’t be kept a secret. I wish I knew about this sooner, but I will definitely share these opportunities with my friends and their families.” said Huckabee.

Assemblyman Atkins stated, “I believe that it is essential to provide exposure and information about alternative pathways to ensure that every individual can explore diverse career options and achieve their full potential.”

Part 2 of the series will provide an opportunity for students and families to have a firsthand experience! Participants will have the chance to join Assemblyman Atkins and his team in person for a ship tour located in Elizabeth, NJ. The tour will include a sailing experience on the harbor, visiting maritime schools, and various educational stations, allowing attendees to gain a comprehensive understanding of the maritime industry. Additionally, the event will offer networking opportunities and the chance to interact with professionals currently working in the field.

Assemblyman Atkins is committed to fostering economic growth and providing opportunities for residents in the district. This 2-part series aligns with his vision of empowering individuals and ensuring that everyone has access to a diverse range of career options. By showcasing the maritime industry, Assemblyman Atkins hopes to inspire and motivate the youth and families of Roselle, Union, Elizabeth, and Kenilworth to explore alternative pathways that lead to fulfilling and rewarding careers.

Atkins also expressed his passion for increased access to apprenticeship programs for high school students noting that, “these opportunities should not be the best kept secret,” and “I will continue to form strong partnerships with various industries to ensure our youth have the best chance to succeed, whether through college or gaining direct experience through early workforce opportunities.”

For more information on this exciting 2-part series and to register for the events, please contact the Assemblyman’s office at (908)445-7154 between 9 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday. Participation is free, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend and learn about the remarkable opportunities available in the maritime industry.
