Assemblywoman Angela McKnight Works to Flatten the COVID-19 Curve By Bringing Food to Seniors

(March 27, 2020—JERSEY CITY, NJ)— New Jersey Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight (D-Hudson County) in partnership with her non-profit AngelaCARES has raised nearly $20,000 to feed low-income elderly families in Jersey City during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

“In order to truly flatten the curve on COVID-19, we must encourage our seniors to stay in where it is safe. We continue to shop for them and raise money to make sure they have adequate food and supplies during this time so that they don’t have to come out and jeopardize their health,” says Assemblywoman Angela McKnight (D-Hudson County), who founded AngelaCARES in 2011. AngelaCARES is an advocacy organization for senior citizens based in Jersey City, NJ.

On Thursday, AngelaCARES received a single donation of $10,000 from Third Point Reinsurance, a public company with offices in Jersey City. Staff members from Third Point and other volunteers will shop for seniors who are shut-in during this period on Saturday, March 28, 2020 from 8 am to 10 am at ShopRite, 400 Marin Blvd., Jersey City, NJ.

Since Tuesday, March 17, Assemblywoman McKnight and AngelaCARES has held several shopping events at ShopRite in Jersey City to feed nearly 500 low-income residents who live in senior housing. Assemblywoman McKnight and her staff are assisted by ShopRite’s team members to select appropriate food items. Volunteers shop, bag and deliver groceries to seniors throughout the week. This effort is scheduled to continue throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assemblywoman McKnight set a fundraising goal of $2,000 on March 13 in hopes of feeding at least 200 families. She exceeded that goal within hours and has now raised approximately $20,000 so far. In addition to the major donation of $10,000 from Third Point, other donations have ranged from $5 to $250 from individual donors through Facebook, CashApp and PayPal.
