Assemblywoman Quijano Addresses Free Fare Week and Ongoing Issues of NJ Transit Trains

Quijano commends Free Fare Week but calls for NJ Transit to prioritize critical issues amid summer commuting challenges

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Annette Quijano today expressed her gratitude to New Jersey Transit for offering free fares to commuters this week, acknowledging the much-needed financial relief in a time of rising costs. However, she emphasized that despite this meaningful gesture, it is important to recognize that free rides alone will not solve the underlying problems that have made commuting a challenge, especially during the past few months.

“In the midst of record-breaking heatwaves this summer, commuters have had to face a host of issues on NJ Transit,” said Assemblywoman Quijano (D-Union). “They have dealt with malfunctioning air conditioning and an unreliable app with inaccurate timetables, as well as repeated delays and cancellations, often without warning, causing frustration and disruption in their daily routines.”

The Assemblywoman called on NJ Transit to focus on addressing the ongoing issues that have impacted commuters through the summer, including the widespread problems with air conditioning on trains and the repeated delays and cancellations that have plagued the system. Beyond the conditions of the trains, she also emphasized the need for an updated NJ Transit app, to provide commuters with accurate, real-time updates on train schedules, delays, and cancellations so they can plan accordingly.

“I hope to work with my legislative colleagues and stakeholders across the state to demand and implement meaningful changes at NJ Transit,” Assemblywoman Quijano added. “While Free Fare Week is a step in the right direction, NJ Transit must address these issues and prioritize reliable service.”
