Baraka Issues Letter to US Coast Guard Opposing of the Newark Bay Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike

“More vehicles, more greenhouse gas pollution, no reduction in traffic congestion and no consideration of alternatives”

New Jersey – Mayor Ras J. Baraka sent the attached letter to the US Coast Guard today prior to the closing of the public comment period for the Newark Bay Hudson County Extension project on July 11th.

“The Environmental Assessment of the Newark Bay Bridge demolition is disingenuous,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “It ignores the full $10.7 billion turnpike widening project, a project guaranteed to increase traffic, increase pollution, and overburden our historically overburdened, underserved communities with even greater environmental injustice. From the beginning, this project has been destined to exacerbate the problems it has proposed to solve, with no consideration of the many, more reasonable, more cost-effective and more responsible alternatives. I strongly urge the US Coast Guard to listen to the communities most affected by this reckless development and reject the current EA, thereby forcing the State to reconsider how to transform transportation in our region.”
