Bateman Bill Helping Clear the Air of Greenhouse Gases is Now Law

Senator Kip Bateman’s legislation banning the sale or installation of equipment containing greenhouse gases was signed by the governor.

The new law (A5583/S3919) transitions the State to less harmful alternatives by prohibiting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other gases that threaten the ozone.

“Moving to more environmentally benign refrigerants benefits the climate and reduces health risks to the public,” said Bateman (R-16). “Replacement gases are available and proven. I am pleased this bipartisan measure has become law.”

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a form of greenhouse gases that contain hydrogen, fluorine and carbon. They are commonly used in various commercial and industrial applications.

The phase-out of HFCs required by Bateman’s measure begins on July 1 and becomes more extensive each year through 2024.
