Bateman: New Jerseyans Shouldn’t Be Fooled by Gov. Murphy’s Outrageous Spending Plan

Senator Kip Bateman warned taxpayers not to be fooled by the gimmicks in Governor Phil Murphy’s budget proposal that are intended to hide the real cost of his middle-class tax increases and distract from the decades of damage his borrowing scheme will inflict upon New Jersey.

“Governor Murphy’s gimmicky rebate scheme is a sad attempt to try to distract taxpayers from the billions in higher taxes and borrowing costs they’ll pay for decades under his outrageous spending plan,” said Bateman. “It’s like walking into a store where all of the prices have just been raised by 20% and being told the 10% off coupon they’re handing you will save you money. People are smarter than that.”

The governor’s FY 2021 State Budget proposal includes billions in new spending that’s supported by more than $1 billion of tax and fee increases and $4 billion of borrowing.

A variety of middle-class tax hikes are planned by Governor Murphy, including higher cigarette taxes, increased motor vehicle registration fees, larger payroll taxes, new health insurance taxes, and higher fees for hunters.

“Working families are going to be hit with a slew of new or higher taxes and fees that the governor is not talking about at all,” added Bateman. “His borrowing scheme is one of the most irresponsible things I have ever seen proposed in Trenton. Our kids and grandkids will be stuck paying for this year’s budget for the next 35 years. That’s the truth he never talks about at his press conferences.”
