Benson Statement on Transportation Budget Hearing

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Daniel Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex), member of the Assembly Budget Committee and chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, released the following statement in response to Monday’s hearing to receive testimony from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) , Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and NJTRANSIT on the FY2021 budget:

“Our transportation agencies are facing unprecedented challenges as we continue to grapple with COVID-19. Low ridership on New Jersey Transit trains and buses that were full just six months ago is a major concern. Long lines continue at Motor Vehicle Commission offices after a four-month closure. The challenges of keeping workers safe amid a global pandemic are daunting.

“The testimony we received today gave us insight into how the DOT, MVC and NJT are finding innovative ways to serve residents and keep our state moving amid COVID-19. However, it’s clear some of the legacy issues that hindered these agencies before the pandemic continue to persist. The Legislature is dedicated to crafting a responsible spending plan that will not only support transportation during COVID-19, but proactively move us forward.”
