Bhimani and Draeger Meet with Local Activists to Discuss Gun Safety

MORRISTOWN — Following a week of tragic mass shootings across the country that together claimed more than 30 lives, candidates for State Assembly Dr. Lisa Bhimani and Darcy Draeger held a roundtable Tuesday night to discuss the impact of gun violence on the residents of the 25th Legislative District, and common-sense solutions to keep our communities safe.

The event brings together community leaders and concerned residents, including gun-violence survivor, Tiffany Starr, March for Our Lives Morris County organizer, Maimoonah Shafqat, and affected students and gun safety activists from across the district.

“Everywhere we go we hear from students who are afraid to go to school and people who feel like they’re not safe at their supermarket or in a movie theater. We can’t and won’t accept gun violence in our communities as the new normal,” said Bhimani. “There’s so much work that must be done. We’re honored to stand alongside Moms Demand Action, March for Our Lives, and concerned residents in this fight.”

Gun violence has been at the forefront of the campaign in the 25th Legislative District. In June, a man was arrested outside of an elementary school only 30 minutes away in Westfield, NJ with a loaded .45-caliber handgun and 130 rounds of ammunition.

“People aren’t looking for political slogans, they’re looking for real change that will keep our children safe at school and for ten years Anthony Bucco has shown us that’s not something he can deliver,” said Draeger. “Anthony Bucco has kowtowed to his donors at the NRA and voted no every time it’s mattered most: from establishing gun-free zones at schools to banning high capacity magazines that have already claimed the lives of too many Americans. These weapons of war have no place in our communities and we demand better.”
