Billie Jean King Endorses Mikie Sherrill for Governor
BLOOMFIELD — Today, Billie Jean King — a women’s sports legend and American icon — endorsed Mikie Sherrill for governor, citing her strong leadership for women and families.
“Mikie Sherrill has delivered for her constituents in Congress and I know she will bring that same tenacity and fight for women and families as New Jersey’s next governor,” said Billie Jean King. “As a young woman in the Navy at a time when she was one of the few women pilots, Mikie was tested and learned how to lead. She has the backbone to defend our freedoms and our rights. With so much on the line, I hope you’ll get out to vote for Mikie early or on June 10.”
“When I think of leaders my daughters can look up to, Billie Jean King is at the top of the list. She paved the way for women athletes through a spectacular career on the court, but didn’t stop there. She has used her voice to fight for abortion rights and our LGBTQ community. Billie Jean is the definition of a trailblazer, and that’s why I’m so humbled to have her support in this campaign,” said Mikie Sherrill.
Last year, Mikie co-led the legislative effort to award Billie Jean King the Congressional Gold Medal — making her the first individual female athlete to receive Congress’ highest honor. Mikie has long been a champion for Title IX in athletics and worked to address the dramatic inequities between men’s and women’s collegiate athletics. She also helped secure passage of the Equal Pay for Team USA Act, which now requires that athletes representing the U.S. in global amateur athletic competitions, no matter their gender, receive equal compensation and benefits in their sport.
Mikie has also been endorsed by Maine Governor Janet Mills, U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride, EMILYs List, Latina Civic PAC, Elect Democratic Women, Chatham Moms for Change, Morris County Democratic Women’s Caucus, the Democratic Task Force of the Women’s Political Caucus of New Jersey, Vote Mama, National Women’s Political Caucus, and more.
