Black Lives Matter PAC Endorses Imani Oakley for Congress
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Imani Oakley, who is running a progressive primary campaign in New Jersey’s 10th congressional district, received another prominent endorsement, this one from Black Lives Matter PAC, which seeks to elect progressive community leaders, activists, and working-class candidates fighting for Black liberation.
“‘Black Lives Matter’ is not an empty slogan to me,” said Oakley. “It represents the bare minimum demand for respect for me, my family, and my community. My platform includes specific details of how we’re going to fight back against white supremacy, including a counterterrorism task force narrowly aimed at white supremacist organizations, a plan to invest in the community and divest from further militarization of the police, a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and checks for reparations for descendants of enslaved people. I am both honored and invigorated by Black Lives Matter PAC’s support for me and this platform.”
Other endorsees for this round of Black Lives Matter PAC’s endorsements include Senator Raphael Warnock, Georgia Gubernatorial Candidate Stacey Abrams, and Oakley’s fellow congressional progressive challenger Nina Turner (OH-11).A diverse progressive coalition continues to grow around Oakley’s campaign, with endorsements coming in from Brand New Congress, Catch Fire, Elect Black Women PAC, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Americans for Justice in Palestine Action Fund, West Orange Young Democrats, Harvard Dems, Building Bridges For America, Roadmap for Progress, FutureGen PAC, four local Sunrise Movement hubs, Black Lives Matter activist Zellie Imani, Mt. Rainier Vice Mayor Scott Cecil, Maplewood Mayor Dean Dafis, Muslim community leader and civil rights advocate Selaedin Maksut, former progressive presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, and Palestinian-American community leader Wassim Kanaan.
“We are building a progressive movement aimed at the forces hurting our communities,” Oakley said. “As Congresswoman, I will work tirelessly to win a future where we can be safe from the violence of white supremacy.”
