Black Lives Matter Recognizes One Year Anniversary of the Murder of George Floyd

While being in the midst of a global pandemic, George Floyd’s murder has become a pivotal moment in history, a reckoning for racial justice across the nation. May 25th marks one year since the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, who died at the hands of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, who kneeled on Mr.Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes.

Following the death of George Floyd, the nation responded with peaceful protests to dismantle systemic racism at all levels of society that specifically target Black and Brown people. People from all walks of life, across the economic and ethnic spectrum, cried out in one voice, “Black Lives Matter.” In response, law enforcement officers continued with violence, excessive force, and abuse. The global movement of Black Lives Matter has called for an end to state sanctioned violence and for a reimagining of public safety. As long as the uprising for justice carries forward, so does the fight.

While racial equity challenges become the forefront of today’s discussion, our organization continues to demand institutional change and greater accountability in hopes that there will come a day where we won’t need to remember George Floyd for his death, but celebrate the future George Floyd’s for their lives.

In honor of the Floyd family and all families who have experienced loss due to police violence, the Black Lives Matter movement is asking the community to join us this Tuesday, May 25th, 6PM, at the Paterson Library on Broadway to stand in solidarity for the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd.
