Booker, Blackburn, Rosen, Braun, Boozman Announce Reintroduction of Bipartisan Women Veterans Appreciation Day Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Mike Braun (R-IN), and John Boozman (R-AR) announced the  reintroduction of a bipartisan resolution designating June 12, 2023 as Women Veterans Appreciation Day, a day to honor women veterans for their military service and recognize the growing presence of women in the United States Armed Forces and National Guard. 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 being signed into law, which allowed women to serve as permanent members of the military.

“Not long ago, women were not allowed to serve in active-duty positions in the United States military,” said Senator Booker. “Despite barriers, women have courageously served with honor throughout our history, securing our country’s independence and defending the Union during the Civil War. They have taken up diverse roles in our Armed Forces and continue to serve our nation with valor. Today I join my colleagues in introducing this resolution that will designate June 12, 2023, as a day to honor the women who put their lives on the line to protect our nation.”

“Today on June 12, we celebrate the honorable women who have served our country. There are over 33,000 female veterans from Indiana and it is vital that we recognize their service and sacrifice for our nation, while acknowledging the unique challenges they face,” said Senator Braun.

“As we recognize the 75th anniversary of the groundbreaking Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, we can be proud of the women who charted a new course for future generations of girls to realize their dream of serving in our nation’s uniform and holding military positions that were once unthinkable. I will continue to advocate for policies that provide these brave individuals the honor, recognition and benefits they earned,” said Senator Boozman.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that Booker has introduced a Senate resolution marking June 12 as Women Veterans Appreciation Day.

“Women Veterans Appreciation Day is a day where we can pause and reflect on the accomplishments of women veterans nation-wide. It recognizes the sacrifices we have made, the commitment to our country, and the groundbreaking paths we have paved for the thousands of women servicemembers now serving. The profound sense of patriotism displayed by our women veterans reminds us how a strong woman knows her strength enough for the journey, but a woman of strength knows it is the journey where she will become strong,” said Lucy Del Gaudio, US Army Veteran – NJSOS Veterans Stakeholders/Chief Operations Officer – The Pink Berets.
