Bucco Introduces Measure to Establish Overdose Awareness Day

Overdose Deaths Increased by 20% During Shutdown

Senator Anthony M. Bucco has introduced legislation to designate August 31st as Overdose Awareness Day in New Jersey. This comes in the wake of reports that overdoses have spiked by 20% during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“No New Jersey family has been immune from the tragic opioid epidemic that has plagued our state and our nation,” said Bucco (R-25). “We need to work together to heighten awareness while breaking the stigma surrounding addiction.

“The battle against opioids and overdose deaths continues. We encourage those suffering from addiction to seek treatment and help comfort the families and friends of those who have lost their lives. Recognizing Overdose Awareness Day sends a strong message to former or current substance users that they are valued and loved.”

Bucco’s resolution would recognize August 31 of each year as “Overdose Awareness Day” in New Jersey.

In 2018, 67,367 individuals died from drug overdoses in the United States. In New Jersey alone that year, 2,900 people died as a result of an overdose.
