Senator Anthony Bucco (R-25) has introduced a constitutional amendment that would create an annual $500 property tax deduction for permanently disabled law enforcement officers.

“We must do more to support police officers who are injured in the line of duty,” Bucco said. “These men and women swore to protect us, at all costs. We cannot take away their pain, but we can express our gratitude for their service by easing the financial burden of living with a permanent disability. Providing an annual $500 property tax deduction so they can continue to get great care in their home state is a good start.”

Senator Bucco’s legislation, SCR-141/ACR-187, would create an annual $500 property tax deduction for permanently disabled law enforcement officers who were injured in the line of duty.

The tax deduction established by the constitutional amendment would also be available for a deceased officer’s surviving spouse.

In order to become law, SCR-141/ACR-187, would require a vote of at least three-fifths of both the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly. The legislation would then be required to be placed on the State ballot during the next election cycle.

“The cost of living with a disability can be devastating,” Bucco added. “The last thing these officers, or their families, should have to worry about is how they are going to deal with New Jersey’s high tax burden. By aiding our permanently disabled law enforcement officers in this way, we can ensure these heroes can continue to live close to their loved ones.”
