Burlington County Election Reminder: Register by May 17 for New Jersey Primary

MOUNT HOLLY – Burlington County elections officials are reminding residents to register to vote by May 17 to participate in this year’s New Jersey Primary Election.

“Our nation’s democracy works best and is strongest when we all participate in it, so we’re encouraging all eligible U.S. citizens who aren’t yet registered to do so and learn about the ways to cast a ballot,” said Burlington County Superintendent of Elections Dawn Marie Addiego. “You can now vote by mail, drop box or machine. All three methods are safe and secure, but it all begins with being registered. It’s the first step to making sure your voice is heard.”

How to register

Voters can also register online at https://nj.gov/state/elections/voter-registration.shtml or obtain a paper voter registration form that can be mailed to the Superintendent of Elections Office. All completed registration forms must arrive at the Superintendents Office before closing on May 17 for the voter to be eligible to participate in the upcoming primary.

Registration can also be done in person at most municipal buildings and also at the Burlington County Superintendent of Elections Office at 50 Rancocas Road, Mount Holly, which is open from 8 AM to 4 PM on weekdays. The Superintendent of Elections Office will have special hours from 8 AM to 9 PM on May 17 to handle last-minute registrations.

An eligible Burlington County voter must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 17 years old (though you may not vote until you have reached the age of 18) and be a resident of Burlington County for at least 30 days before the June 7 election date.

Voters can check their registration status online at https://voter.svrs.nj.gov/registration-check

Choosing a party affiliation

Voters interested in voting in the New Jersey primary must choose a party. Only voters registered as a Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary and only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary.

Unaffiliated voters can change their party affiliation to either Republican or Democratic to vote in the primary.  This can be done in advance by submitting a party affiliation declaration form to the Superintendent of Elections Office or at an in-person polling location during the early voting period or on election day.

Unaffiliated voters who requested a Vote-by-Mail ballot may also choose a party affiliation when returning their ballot.

Residents with questions about the election and voting process can call the Burlington County Elections hotline at 609-265-VOTE.
