In a statement, CAIR-NJ Executive Director Selaedin Maksut said:
“We applaud Governor Murphy’s statements welcoming Afghan refugees into New Jersey. It is especially honorable that the Governor would take such a stance when far too many political leaders across the nation are stoking xenophobia and Islamophobia at the thought of more Muslims entering the United States. Elected officials who stand firm against racism and fear-mongering help keep everyone safe, especially vulnerable refugees and diaspora communities.
“The people of Afghanistan would not be fleeing their homes today if it were not for decades of shameful US intervention. Therefore, it is our government’s responsibility to provide Afghans with safe refuge. If we care about human rights, we should welcome any Afghan wishing to immigrate to America.
“Learning from our history is the only way to move forward. We hope to join Governor Murphy in welcoming Afghan refugees with open arms and ensuring their safety in New Jersey. Resettlement will not be easy. Our CAIR New Jersey office and the New Jersey Muslim community stand ready to offer their support to anyone wishing to make this state their new home.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
