CAIR-NJ Welcomes Bias Intimidation Charges Against Man Who Attacked Muslim Man on Train
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 05/06/2019) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today welcomed bias intimidation charges against a man who attacked a Muslim man on an NJ Transit train on Friday night.
Around 11 p.m. on Friday night, Johnny Juica-Pena, 52 got into a dispute and altercation, allegedly because the victim couldn’t tell him whether or not there was someone in the bathroom on the train. The victim was wearing a kufi, a cap worn by Muslim men, and Jucia-Pena allegedly yelled racial slurs at him, before punching him.

“Hateful acts of violence such as those allegedly carried out on NJ Transit on Friday night cannot be tolerated and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues. “Unfortunately, we are once again reminded of the poisonous political atmosphere that divides this country along religious and ethnic lines.”
In a recent report, CAIR noted a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents and a 15 percent increase in hate crimes against American Muslims since Trump took office.
