Local Veterans’ Organizations Continue to Answer the Call

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ – During these uncertain times when most businesses are closed and citizens are being asked to stay home, members of Veteran Organizations throughout Cape May County are working to supply meals and services to those in need. They are working together to ensure elderly Veterans and shut-ins are being cared for and their needs are met during the COVID-19 pandemic.

VFW Post 6650 in Ocean City is very involved in the community and this situation is no exception. They are supplying meals for elderly and homebound Veterans and working with other local organizations to also provide students with meals to ensure they are getting at least one meal a day. They are providing this service at no charge.

VFW Post 5343 in the Villas section of Lower Township has mobilized to feed elderly and shut-in Veterans as well. They are also providing meals for the EMS and Firemen as part of their efforts to serve the community. They remain active in their mission to help local Veterans serving overseas.

“These are brave Veterans are on the front line again, fighting an invisible enemy, we are all proud of their actions,” said John Vollrath, the VFW District 17 Commander VFW, Cape May County.

Military service organization have been serving military personnel and their families for more than 120, years by aiding and supporting them in their time of need. The first such organization was the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), founded in 1899. These service organizations continue to meet the challenge of the pandemic to help veterans navigate through the uncertainty they are facing. They offer a myriad of services to ensure the well-being of veterans across the country.

Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton, liaison the County Veterans Bureau, added, “This is exactly what we have come to expect from our Veterans. They understand the plea for “all hands on deck” and are always ready to answer the call. It is at a time like this that our Veterans step into action to protect their fellow service men and women and serve their community.”

Freeholder Jeffrey L. Pierson, Retired Brigadier General, added, “Our Veterans have an instilled sense of duty, pride, and loyalty for their Country. They don’t need to be asked, they just do what is needed in time of crisis. We are grateful for their service to the country and community. I encourage anyone who is a veteran or knows a veteran in need to reach out to their local VFW post or call the Veterans Bureau for assistance and guidance.”

The Cape May County Veterans Bureau offers services and is available to answer questions and aid veterans, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
