IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL BIKE MONTH, HOBOKEN TO INCREASE CITY-WIDE BICYCLE PARKING CAPACITY BY 20%
In celebration of National Bike Month, Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla announced plans to install an additional 150 bike racks and 350 bike parking spaces in Hoboken by the end of the year. The new bicycle parking will increase Hoboken’s total publicly accessible bike parking capacity by 20%. The Hoboken Department of Transportation is prioritizing bike parking as part of the City’s COVID-19 recovery strategy, and in the City’s Vision Zero pedestrian safety plan to encourage safe, alternative transportation options.
As a part of the bike parking expansion, Mayor Bhalla encourages residents and businesses to suggest locations for the installation of the new bike racks, which will be incorporated whenever possible. The website also includes information about the City of Hoboken’s Bicycle Rack and Bicycle Corral sponsorship program. Through the program, organizations can pay a nominal fee to help cover the cost of purchasing and installing a public bicycle rack or bicycle corral outside their business, office or building. Since the program was launched 10 years ago, several businesses and civic groups have already helped subsidize the expansion of bicycle parking at dozens of locations across the city. Local business owners interested in sponsoring a public bike rack or corral outside of their storefront can also complete and return this form. Condominium associations are also welcome to sponsor a public bike rack.
As of May, 2021, Hoboken has 409 publicly-accessible bicycle racks, which have the capacity to park 1,764 bicycles. The City’s goal is to provide convenient and secure bicycle parking as a simple and affordable way to support residents and visitors choosing to ride a bicycle in Hoboken.
Mayor Bhalla previously announced plans to expand the City’s bicycle lane network, including a new protected bike lane on Sinatra Drive between 4th Street and 11th Street, and earlier this month launched the expansion of Citi Bike into Hoboken.
“Increasing bicycle parking in public places will assist residents as they bike to transit hubs, patronize our businesses, and visit friends and family,” said Mayor Bhalla. “Along with the recent expansion of Citi Bike in Hoboken and network of new bike lanes on City and County streets, we are committed to investing in bike infrastructure, which improves the quality of life within our Mile Square.”
“Expanding bike infrastructure in the City of Hoboken is beneficial for so many reasons – there will be fewer cars on the road when we make it easier and safer to travel by bike, especially for kids,” said Councilwoman Emily Jabbour. “Installing more bicycle parking locations is also a great way to advance the goals of Vision Zero by daylighting intersections to improve pedestrian safety, such as those that were installed at the corner of 8th and Park.”
“When bike parking is readily available near your destination, it’s one less thing to worry about when you’re heading out on your bicycle,” said Bike Hoboken president Chris Adair. “Bike Hoboken looks forward to having more available bike parking throughout Hoboken.”
